According to a study measuring cognitive capacity, the more associations we can generate around a single idea, the better we are off with our mental hygiene. Even one line of thought is able to mobilize a bunch of memories, thoughts, affections or pieces of information that are linked involuntarily. In the era of hypermedia, most of the communications are trafficked on a space (World Wide Web) of a similar structure architecture with links. If the brain makes connections between neurons via synapsis, its equivalent in the cyberspace is hypertext that weaves a web and navigates through the myriads of its contents.

The notion of hypertext was first articulated in the 1960s, and its coming to age was informed by the developments in information communication technologies (electronic displays) and the novel form of postmodern consciousness. Hypertext is a radically new form of textuality and publication mode for texts that shake up the linear logic of the former cultural output of the Gutenberg Galaxy.

Hypertext – electronic blocks interlinked by multiple paths – are:
a, open-ended, has no beginning or end
b, its sequence is reversible
c, offers different pathways
d, always incomplete
e, it branches and the direction of the progress is determined by the choice of the user
f,  instead of linear pathways it navigates through intuitive jumps between nodes
g, is to be described by terms of »link«, »node«, »network«, »web« and »path« 2

If printed books traditionally formed a closed universe of text-being – its integrity and cohesion was only disturbed by footnotes or the listed literatures in the back – hypertext exists on the same level and on the same platform with every other cultural product previously produced (and digitalized). Hypertext is an additional or hidden dimension of a text, that references other texts and interlinks contents of great distances in time and space – most easily via tags.

According to Marshall McLuhan, as hyperlink connects textual with non-textual (audiovisual) information, it expands the notion of textuality beyond the verbal and reaches the state of hypermedia that channels senses other than the visual.
